Gorillas’ Birthday Celebration Featured on TLC’s DC Cupcakes

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo will be featured on the season two premiere of DC Cupcakes, airing Feb. 25 at 10:30 p.m. on TLC.  In honor of the Zoo’s episode, Georgetown Cupcake will sell a honey-banana-flavored cupcake named “Gone Bananas!” and donate the entire proceeds to benefit the Zoo’s conservation programs. The promotion will run from Feb. 18 to March 4 at both the Georgetown and Bethesda cupcake stores.  

DC Cupcakes follows sisters and business partners Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis and their colorful crew at Georgetown Cupcake. Portions of the premiere were filmed at the Great Ape House in November to celebrate the birthdays of two male western lowland gorillas, Kwame, 11, and Kojo, 9.

After many long years of small community resistance, and another case of “Not in My Back Yard” politicking, the Cathedral Commons, which will include a more expansive grocery store, shopping options, residential housing, and an enlivened streetscape, will soon become a reality. 

Giant has not yet selected a developer or general contractor for the project but they have several proposals and will make a selection within the next few months.  The construction of the new buildings is expected to begin in the fall.

Unfortunately, the existing stores have to shut down.  The barber's sign says he's leaving at the end of this month and some tenants, like Sullivan’s, have been extended until June.

Allure magazine's top DC salon, Kavenchy, hosted it's first Annual Spring Look Runway Show Monday night.   Guests began arriving at 7PM for the invitation only event sponsored by Phytos and Dermalogica.   The theme for the show was spring and no detail was spared to transport guests from the outside cold into a spring garden.  The "red carpet" was thrown out and replaced instead with green plant wire meshing like the kind you would find at the garden store. The runway was lined with gerber daisies, some orchids and bamboo. The night consisted of two runway shows, one to showcase cut and color and the other featured styling.  Kavenchy tapped PEKvida a newly formed boutique public relations firm, founded by PR veterans Pergrin, Elly Sharriat and Khaleelah Po Rome to create his signature event.
