The Cribline Goes Country, President’s Day Get Away – Rappahannock County, VA

This weekend, I took a break from the DC tour of homes, and The Cribline House Pick of the Week, and I went South to Rappahannock County, VA the home of the Inn at Little Washington (Washington, VA) and Sperryvillefor the President’s Day weekend.

There are no cell towers out there, so I was disconnected for 2 solid days. When was the last time your smartphone was useless? No email, no texts, no mobile phone.

I went out with a couple friends and I made a reservation at the wonderful and friendly Hopkins Ordinary bed and breakfast in downtown Sperryville… with some of the best chocolate chip cookies around btw… great rooms, great hospitality… only the reservation was for the wrong night. So, just when I thought we were stuck without a place to stay, my good pal Jimmy, a local resident, put me in touch with his friend Pam who was just putting the finishing touches on her newly restored and impeccably decorated rental cottage. It was available. What for a moment seemed like a disaster, turned into a very pleasant surprise.

This was just one of the many treats that is Rappahannock County… located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains just below the entrance to Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park. Not only is it quiet and beautiful, but there is a lot to do, including touring the many Virginia wineries in the vicinity and several orchards where you can find farm fresh vegetables and other country treats such as fresh thick cut bacon.  There’s a local whiskey and rye distillery, and antique emporium, art galleries, and a couple great restaurants. And, for the hiking enthusiasts, there’s the famous Old Rag Mountain.  And for animals lovers… you’ll find all kinds of animals.

Instead of the pick of the week, I wanted to share with you some of the highlights of this great and peaceful get away that is just about an hour and a half away from DC.  These highlights include some picks that I would recommend checking out.

But before I do, I wanted to say, this is just one of the most charming places I think in the area, and the people very friendly, which I found particularly handy when I got a flat tire.  From the guys at Rudy’s pizza who offered to put on my spare tire in the dark, the local restaurant manager from Thorton River Grill who called the local tow company and garage, to Pam who loaned me her truck for the evening… this locale, with a population under 350, and where it is rare for someone to lock their door, was hard to leave.

Our first stop was the Little Washington Winery…  where I met up with my friends. It just opened in November. You can order a cheese plate and bottle of wine and sit out on their deck with an open and scenic view of the Blue Ridge mountains. I also recommend Sharp Rock Vinyards… Jim and Kathy are the proprietors.

After a sip of wine, we went to check in at the fantastic 27 Main Street. We were its first guests thanks to John and Pam Kiser. It was the home of Pam’s great grandmother, and it was recently restored with all of today’s modern amenities and very tastefully decorated with Pam’s own antiques and personal touch.

Once we dropped off our bags we set off for Copper Fox Antiques and across the way the Copper Fox Whisky and Rye Distillery. That took most of the afternoon, and there was still time for a little reading and a nap before dinner at the Thorton River Grill, where I highly recommend the ribeye steak and the Côtes du Rhône wine.

Before checking out some of the real estate out here my friend Jimmy, who could easily make a killing with his hospitality and chef skills, whipped up a feast for Sunday brunch.  Thanks Jimmy!!!
