Dorm Room Cleaning Service Comes To GWU

Cue the George Washington University student cheers: Dorm room cleaners are now available in Foggy Bottom.

DC3, launched in April 2011 by GWU graduates Michael Waterman(Class of 2011) and Nate Andorsky(Class of 2010), is a D.C. dorm room cleaning company dedicated to taking some of the filth out of the college experience.

"The idea came about during December of 2010," Andorsky said.  "(Waterman) and I had been involved in other entrepreneurial ventures together during college (at GWU) and we were looking to start something new in the area. We often overheard students talking about the lack of a cleaning service at GW and started thinking about how to develop this idea and turn it into a new venture."

The duo began researching the project's potential and decided that "affordable, accessible, and easy cleaning service" for dorms at GW was an untapped market.  Since then, the original vision has been developed into what is now a fully operational business.

"DC3 offers three main types of cleans; basic, premium, and premium plus," Andorsky explained.  "The basic clean is just a clean of the bathrooms. DC3 recognized that many students were looking to keep their bathrooms clean and were not as concerned with the upkeep of the rest of their room, which is why the basic clean is offered. However, our premium clean includes a clean of the entire dorm room, including bathrooms, living area, kitchen, and bedrooms. The premium plus clean includes everything our premium clean offers but also adds a thorough clean of the inside of the microwave, stove, and refrigerator."

There is some history behind dorm room cleaning at GW.

The University used to provide freshmen with housekeeping until they cancelled the service before the 2010-2011 school year, much to the dismay of incoming students.

Andorsky said that the response from the GW community has been quite strong and that, while the current focus is on Foggy Bottom, expansion is a future possibility.

"There are plans to expand to the other DC-area schools such as American University, Catholic University, Georgetown University, Howard University, and University of Maryland Right now the company is concentrating on branding specifically at GW in an effort to establish a strong brand and nail down the business model before expanding to other DC area schools."

But for now, Andorsky and Waterman see their alma mater as the target, engaging their base by hiring students, getting involved in the community, and even offering a joint promotion with Foggy Bottom deli FoBoGro.

"We felt that since we had been in the shoes of these college students, we were better equipped to cater towards them and fulfill their needs," Andorsky said.  "Attending GW gave us a better understanding of how to offer a service like this on campus."
